Botox Myths Vs. Facts Fort Collins

It’s the 21st century and it seems like everyone is getting Botox, even women in their 20’s are starting Botox as a preventative approach to keeping fine lines from developing. However, for years there has been controversy surrounding the use of cosmetic Botox, leading to many false claims and misinformation.

At Harmony Skin & Wellness Clinic we aim to inform and educate our patients so they know exactly what aesthetic services will work best for them.

So what exactly are the facts vs. the myths surrounding BOTOX Cosmetic?

Myth #1: BOTOX Cosmetic is unsafe.

Fact: BOTOX Cosmetic has a long and well-established safety history. While you may know BOTOX Cosmetic as a wrinkle treatment, it has actually been in use for over 18 years for the effective treatment of a range of medical conditions and is one of the most widely researched medicines in the world.

Botox was first used in 1977 to treat strabismus, a problem with the eye muscles. The Food and Drug Administration approved it in 1989 for this purpose. When it was later used to treat uncontrolled muscle spasms in the face, patients had fewer wrinkles in the skin overlying the treated muscle. Doctors started using Botox for cosmetic reasons in 1996, and the FDA approved this use in 2002.

It is reassuring to know that BOTOX Cosmetic is the most popular physician-administered cosmetic treatment in North America with an estimated 16 million treatments performed since it was first approved. In addition, it has received a 97% satisfaction rating among users.

Myth #2: BOTOX Cosmetic will result in the loss of facial expression.

Fact: BOTOX Cosmetic is intended to enhance the way you look, not change it. When administered by an experienced, skilled injector, you can still smile, frown and animate. The treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the lines at the point of injection, so the other elements of facial expression remain active. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, so you will have normal feeling in the treated areas. Properly injected BOTOX Cosmetic refreshes and softens the face while looking undetectable and natural. If you can tell someone has had BOTOX something has gone wrong!

Myth #3: BOTOX Cosmetic is botulism (food poisoning).

Fact: BOTOX Cosmetic is not botulism. It is a purified protein and a finished medical prescription product proven to be very safe through extensive research and testing. Botox is a neurotoxin, which sounds scary, but is actually naturally derived from Clostridium botulinum, an organism found in the natural environment where it is largely inactive and non-toxic. In-fact BOTOX has been helpful in treating medical conditions like migraines, TMJ, Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), and neurological conditions that affect facial muscles such as Parkinson’s.

Myth #4: BOTOX Cosmetic treatment is painful.

Fact: A BOTOX Cosmetic treatment is quick and simple. A very fine needle and a small amount of liquid are used, so the pain associated with the injection is minimal. No anesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities within a few hours.

Myth #5: BOTOX Cosmetic is a filler.

Fact: BOTOX Cosmetic does not work in the same way that a Hyaluronic Acid filler does. HA fillers, like Restylane and Juvederm, are composed of Hyaluronic Acid which can fill in lines, stimulate collagen, and restore volume loss. BOTOX Cosmetic corrects the appearance of wrinkling and fines lines by relaxing the muscles underneath the skin that cause the lines to appear in the first place.
